Some active ingredients explained

Here is a list of some of our favourite active ingredients, explaining where they are used and why. These are the things we are very excited about with and really enjoy formulating with.

Hyaluronic acid – Also called “The Fountain of youth”, this is the Rolls Royce of facial moisturisers. HA is a natural constituent of our skin where it helps to retain moisture and, unsurprisingly, older and/or dry skins have less HA. HA can be found in most expensive serums where, rightly so, it is added for its awesome property to absorb up to 1000 times its weight of water, making it the most effective humectant/moisturiser: compare this to the more commonly used glycerine that can only absorb its own weight in water and over a period of 3 days. Overall, HA makes skin plumper, softer, more hydrated, helps with rejuvenation, protects cell structure and defends against external threats and bacterial infections; thus resulting in a more youthful, toned and moisturised appearance. When using such serums, it is recommended to follow up with a good moisturiser. Our Dry skin moisturiser 1A or Sensitive skin moisturiser work perfectly. What’s not to love?

Rosemary extract – You’ll find it in our facial oils & serums e.g. Serum for problem skin and Rebalancing oil for oily skin. Rosemary extract is a powerful natural antimicrobial agent and antioxidant [=antioxidants inhibit oxidation, or spoiling of other ingredients], and is also used in the food industry. We like adding this to oils and lotions together with Vitamin E (another anti-oxidant) to provide natural protection and increase shelf life of products.

Vitamin E (tocopherol) – You’ll find it in almost all our creams, lotions, oils and serums. It is anti-ageing, anti-oxidant and protects the skin from free radicals. Free radicals on skin are formed during sun exposure, from pollution and also due to oxidation of more delicate oils when exposed to sun’s UV light; free radicals are damaging to skin, they reduce elasticity and create wrinkles, thus accelerating the aging of the skin. We add Vitamin E to Dash skincare products to prevent the more delicate oils and ingredients from going rancid and releasing free radicals on your skin.

Vitamin A (retinol palmitate) – Nourishing, stimulating and regenerating, as well as anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. A fantastic ingredient in products for delicate or mature skin, added to our deeply nourishing 20-minute Vitamin mask as well as the Mature skin serum and Serum for problem serum.

Sea buckthorn – This awesome bioactive oil has been used traditionally in skin care for hundreds of years due to its unique composition with high natural tocopherols (Vit E), carotenoids and ‘good’ fatty acids. It is particularly useful for skin problems that require cell regeneration — dryness, burns, eczema and aging. Also offers a degree of protection against the harmful effects of UV radiation. You’ll find it in our Mature skin serum and in the new Morning Moisture Surge serum.

Chamomile extract – Very soothing and calming, an important constituent of our Sensitive skin moisturiser. Chamomile has been used for centuries both internally (to calm the nerves and the digestive system) and in skin preparations, where its active ingredient bisabolol is known to have some powerful anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. It smells beautiful too!

Cucumber extract – An exciting addition to our new Cool Cucumber eye gel, the gentle cucumber extract is soothing and anti-swelling. Naturally occurring caffeic and ascorbic (vitamin C) acids take care of that.

Chickweed – Soothing and calming to irritated skin, chickweed has been used in traditional medicine for eczema and chapped skin. Particularly good for itchy skin conditions, we like it in our Calming body lotion.

Olive squalane – Derived from pure Mediterranean Olive oil, our olive squalane hydrates the skin, improves elasticity, reduces signs of aging (preventing UV damage) and boosts cell regeneration. Why? Because a closely related molecule sqalene makes up about 12% of our skin’s natural sebum, where it is a vital part of cholesterol, steroid, and Vitamin D synthesis. As squalane works in the same way, our skin identifies it as “ours” and soaks it up. It penetrates the skin quickly offering softening and moisturizing to even really chapped, inflamed or cracked skin. This is why you will find it in our Serum for problem serum and Rebalancing oil for oily skin.

Jojoba oil – At Dash Skincare we like to use Jojoba oil wherever we can e.g. most of our oils and serums, and in the Calming body lotion and After-shave moisture lotion. This is a truly lovely (though expensive 😦 skin product ingredient. Jojoba oil is not actually an oil – it is a wax ester, meaning that it has a weird and wonderful chemistry and special affinity with the skin. In a nutshell, it contains certain fatty acids that give it particularly moisturising, emollient and anti-inflammatory properties, which is of course great. But its two greatest features are easy absorption and the ‘dry’ feel it imparts – this oil is neither greasy nor comedogenic (jojoba rapidly sinks into our skin without blocking the skin pores). Similar to squalane, jojoba actually mixes with the sebum to create a thin, breathable but protective layer.

Evening primrose – is a pretty flowering plant whose yellow flowers open only in the evening, hence the name! Originally from the Americas, EP has been used for centuries to help with a wide range of body healing but also for women’s issues of pregnancy and premenstrual tension. It is one of the richest vegetable sources of gamma-linolenic and linolenic acids and these are great for your skin. Oil from EP is known to reduce scaling, soothe dry skin and alleviate itchiness. Moreover, it is a moisturiser and helps to repair the skin’s natural lipid barrier, and a natural anti-oxidant on top of all that. Found in Calming body lotion,  20-minute Vitamin mask, Sensitive skin moisturiser, After-shave moisture lotion and Mature skin serum.

St John’s Wort – Often used internally as a natural remedy against depression, this macerated oil (made from SJW flowers soaked in organic sunflower oil) has powerful antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. It makes an excellent addition to treatments for inflamed, irritated or infected skin but also for achy and painful joints. You will find it in our Achy bones body lotion and our After sun gel (currently in development), as well as our Serum for problem serum and the Calming body lotion.

Aloe Vera – If you study Dash skincare ingredients, you will see that we also really like Aloe Vera, aka Aloe barbadensis. This amazing succulent plant offers UV protection and UV damage repair (soon to come into After sun gel near you), it is anti-inflammatory and therefore soothing and calming to the skin, speeds up skin and wound healing, and provides anti-itching & anti bacterial properties. Moreover it is very moisturizing because it creates a film barrier on skin preventing moisture loss as well as acting as a natural anti-oxidant helping to preserve all the other nice active ingredients in the mix. Small plant, lots of actions! Dash Skincare products that contain aloe are Calming body lotion, Sensitive skin moisturiser, After-shave moisture lotion & Close shave shaving cream.
